Income Tax Return Filing Analysis – FY 2025-26 (As on 31 August 2026)

ITR filing data as of 31 August 2026 highlights a remarkable surge in taxpayer participation and compliance. Despite an initially slow filing trend, the last few weeks of August witnessed an unprecedented increase in return filings, placing FY 2025-26 on track to become one of the highest ITR filing years in India.

  1. Total ITR Filings Reached 7.81 Crore

As on 31 August 2026, the total number of income tax returns filed stood at 7.81 crore (78,174,325). In comparison, the corresponding figure on 31 August 2025 was 4.18 crore (41,821,225). This indicates that taxpayers filed an additional 3.63 crore returns over the previous year’s level, demonstrating a substantial expansion in the tax base and increased participation in the filing process.

  1. Exceptional Year-on-Year Growth of 86.93%

The increase from 4.18 crore to 7.81 crore returns translates into an impressive 86.93% year-on-year growth. Such a growth rate is extraordinary considering that annual ITR filing numbers generally increase at a much slower pace. This sharp rise reflects significant improvements in taxpayer outreach and compliance mechanisms.

  1. More Than 85% of Expected Returns Already Filed

The estimated total ITR filings for FY 2025-26 are projected to reach approximately 9.18 crore returns. With 7.81 crore returns already filed, the filing progress achieved by 31 August 2026 is This means that over 85% of the expected annual filings had already been completed by the end of August.

  1. Only 1.37 Crore Returns Yet to Be Filed

Based on the projected total filings of 9.18 crore, the remaining returns to be filed are filing the remaining returns appears highly achievable.

  1. Sharp Acceleration in Filing Activity During August-End

One of the most important observations from the data is the significantly increased filing activity during the final days of August. Many taxpayers who had delayed filing their returns utilized the extended filing window and completed compliance closer to the due date. This reflects a common taxpayer behavior pattern where a substantial volume of filings occurs near the deadline.

  1. Daily Filing Volumes Increased Dramatically

The filing trend showed a remarkable increase throughout August.

  • Early August: Approximately 2 to 4 lakh returns per day
  • End of August: More than 35 lakh returns filed on 31 August alone

This demonstrates how filing volumes multiplied several times within a few weeks, highlighting the impact of deadline-driven compliance.

  1. Final Week Contributed More Than 1 Crore Returns

The period from 24 August to 31 August 2026 emerged as the strongest filing phase of the season. During this eight-day period, more than 1 crore additional returns were filed. Daily filing volumes consistently increased, and peak filing activity was recorded on the last day. This indicates that a significant portion of taxpayers chose to file towards the end of the compliance period.

  1. Key Reasons Behind the Surge

Several factors appear to have contributed to the strong filing performance:

    • Improved Taxpayer Compliance: Greater awareness initiatives and compliance monitoring have encouraged taxpayers to file on time.
    • Digital Adoption: The growing use of online filing platforms has simplified the filing process for salaried individuals, professionals, and businesses.
    • Pre-Filled Return Facilities: The Income Tax Department’s pre-filled return system has reduced manual effort by automatically capturing information such as salary income, TDS details, bank interest, dividend income, and securities transactions. This has significantly reduced return preparation time. Chartered accountants and tax practitioners have played a major role in helping taxpayers complete filings accurately and efficiently.
  1. FY 2025-26 Is on Track for a Record-Breaking Year

Compared with FY 2024-25, the current year’s performance is significantly stronger. Although filing activity remained moderate during the initial months, the exceptional rise witnessed in August suggests that FY 2025-26 could set a new benchmark in return filings. Key indicators include the highest ever August-end filing volume, strong year-on-year growth, large participation from salaried taxpayers and small businesses, and increased use of digital filing systems.

  1. Crossing 9 Crore Returns Appears Highly Likely

With only 1.37 crore returns remaining and substantial filing momentum already established, crossing the 9 crore return milestone now appears highly achievable. If the same pace continues over the remaining filing period:

    • Total returns may comfortably exceed 9 crore.
    • FY 2025-26 could become one of the highest ITR filing years in Indian tax administration history.
    • Taxpayer compliance levels may reach record highs.
